他说：“我刚刚来到伯明翰时，他们就来跟我谈话，并告诉我他们想要的足球打法是怎样的。但是仅仅两场比赛之后，我就跟他们说，我们的球员们踢不了那种足球。我想做一些调整，还有适应，然后让球队踢出一些成绩。
“但我得到的回复是‘不，继续这样做，在一月份我们会让你得到有足够能力的球员’。但是2024年刚到，我就被解雇了。”
2023年10月，鲁尼开始执教伯明翰，但是在接下来的9场比赛中，伯明翰只得到了5分。当地时间2024年1月2日，鲁尼下课。
